Prairie Public Broadcasting escaped defunding by North Dakota lawmakers on Monday.
House Bill 1255 proposed banning any state funds from supporting public broadcasting. The bill has been debated for weeks, and had advanced in the House despite ‘do not pass’ recommendations from multiple committees, passing 48-41.
The state Senate then overwhelmingly voted down the measure by a 41-6 vote on Monday.
Opponents, including Fargo Senator Kristin Roers, said on the house floor that defunding Prairie Public Broadcasting would harm local content and programming from appearing in the state.
The organization will still need funds appropriated to them from the budget to continue operations. So far, some legislators have balked at that.
