The Finals of the Men’s and Women’s Olympic basketball games were this last weekend in Paris, with the US trying to double up on gold medals before the closing ceremonies on Sunday.
Both teams would take on the host team France in the finals, but each team had a different route to bringing home the gold to the USA.
The men would be up first on Saturday, after a strong second and third quarter from France, the USA would have to pull out an old familiar trick all American basketball fans are used to in order to seal the win. And that was giving the ball to Steph Curry. Curry would lead the team in scoring with 24 points, going 8-13 from the 3 point line, and delivering the eventual ‘dagger’ that would secure the gold medal for Team USA with a final score of 98-87. Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker would also add 15 points a piece and Anthony Edwards would come off the bench to score 8.
Steph Curry and Lebron James were also named to the All-Olympics Team along with Serbia’s Nikola Jokic, France’s Victor Wembanyama, and Dennis Schroder of Germany.
The US women’s team, had a different route to earn their gold medal, taking on again, the host country France in the finals. This game would come down to free throws and defense, but the US would complete the victory winning 67-66.
Aj’a Wilson would again put the team on her back leading in scoring with 20 points, Kelsey Plum, and Kahleah Copper would come off the bench to score 12 a piece. Copper would make a pair of clutch free throws towards the end of the game to keep the game out of reach of France for a chance to tie. Gabby Williams of France made it interesting with a made jumper with 1 second left on the clock to make it 67-66, but it would not be enough time, and the US Women’s team would clinch there 8th straight gold medal in the Olympics.
Aj’a Wilson and Breanna Stewart were selected to the women’s All-Olympic team, along with Gabby Williams of France, Allana Smith of Australia, and Emma Meesseman of Belgium.
