Experts Give Advice on Preventing Harvest Loss

By Ryan King Sep 27, 2024 | 8:50 AM

A study from the University of Georgia reveals that small harvest losses in corn and soybeans can significantly impact yields. For corn, losing just two kernels per square foot equals one bushel lost per acre, while for soybeans, four kernels result in a similar loss. Challenges arise from pre-harvest conditions and inefficiencies during harvesting. Experts recommend prioritizing fields with standability issues and frequently adjusting combine settings to minimize losses.

Iowa State University and North Carolina State University offer tips for optimizing corn and soybean harvesting. For corn, key adjustments include fine-tuning gathering snouts and cylinder speed to reduce kernel loss. In soybeans, maintaining lower ground speeds, operating cutterbars close to the ground, and ensuring sharp knives are crucial. Effectively managing these factors can enhance harvesting efficiency and boost profitability.
