Agriculture Groups Call for Government Intervention Amid Port Disputes/Harvest

By Ryan King Sep 30, 2024 | 8:45 AM

Agricultural groups are urging the Biden administration to address growing transportation concerns affecting grain shipping as harvest season has begun in the United States. Led by the National Grain and Feed Association, 195 organizations expressed concerns about potential disruptions from the looming port strike talked about previously as well as ongoing rail issues with Mexico. They emphasize that a balanced operation among trucking, rail, and waterways is crucial for efficient commodity movement, especially as current grain export numbers are notably higher than previous years.

Additionally, challenges are compounded by inspections and embargoes affecting shipments to Mexico, causing delays in rail services. The agricultural sector fears that these shipping issues could have significant ripple effects on supply chains, potentially lowering farmgate prices. With crucial trade access at risk, the groups are calling for urgent governmental support to resolve these logistical hurdles and ensure a smooth harvest season amidst adverse conditions like low river levels.
